Explosives industry

Humidity control is especially important during the manufacture and storage of explosives devices, in order to control the build up of static electricity.

Discharge of static electricity can create severe hazards in industries dealing with explosives substances, where a small electrical spark may ignite explosive mixtures. The lower the level of humidity the greater the risk of electrostatic shock.

Additionally, every explosive has a limit of electric charges above which it is liable to go off. It follows that, in the handling of explosives, there is always a potential risk of build-up of static electricity to this dangerous level unless positive actions are taken to dissipate such charge or prevent its accumulation.

Static build-up can be avoided by keeping a humidity level above 50%rh, as the moisture dissipates any electrical charge.

Humidifier selection will depend on the zone location and may need to be ATEX explosion approved.
